While a person who logs onto a website will use the ‘front end’ for the purposes of gaining information, buying products, being entertained etc, it is the ‘back end’ which will support the website and allow the user to undertake the tasks that he or she wishes to do. Typically, the user will be uninterested or unaware of the ‘back end’ support, which includes search engine and database management, user authentication and site security. Website administrators are also part of the ‘back end’ and are responsible for tasks like keeping the servers up and running.
