One of the three major financial statements (the others being the balance sheet and cash flow statement) it is drawn up either monthly or annually and reports on the ability of the business to generate cash. An Income Statement lists elements such as: income; operating expenses; total expenses; depreciation; net profit; interest; pre-tax earnings; and net profit after tax. It is also known as a ‘profit and loss statement’.
