A right which is granted by a government body to an individual or organisation, allowing them exclusive use of an invention or process which they have developed. The aim is to ensure that those who have used their financial resources, expertise and intellectual property to develop a product or service, can derive benefit from it without unlawful copying or reproduction. In South Africa, the former Patents and Trade Marks Office has been integrated into the new Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).
