How to Add a Header and Footer to a Word Document

What is a Word Header?
Headers are used to convey standardised information, like page number, author and date, on every page of your Word document. Headers are situated at the very top of the page. How to add a header differs from one version of Word to the next.
To add a header in Word 2003
- Click on View on the main toolbar:
- Click on Header and Footer
- Type in the information you wish to include in your Header > you can insert Autotext, like page number and date, by clicking on one of the icons in the pop-up Header and Footer toolbox.
- When you’re done, click close.
What is a Word Footer?
Footers can also be used to convey information like page number and date, but are also very useful for footnotes, for example, to cite references in a document. Footers are situated at the very bottom of the page.
To add a footer in Word 2003
- Click on View on the main toolbar
- Click on Header and Footer
- A ‘Header Text Box’ will appear at the top of the page, with a Header and Footer toolbox
- Click on the icon which reads ‘Switch between header and footer’ in its hover text.
- Type in the information you wish to include in your footer, as you did for your Header
- When you’re done, click close.
